The Music of Heaven

I was standing in a crowd of hundreds of people in a large church worship center. It was a time of worship when all the voices in the room seemed to melt into one voice. The room was filled with the sounds of worship and adoration to the Lord.
And then, I thought I heard another sound, and I strained to listen so I could determine what it was. As close as I can describe it, the sound was like the highest notes I had ever heard being played on a multitude of violins- except there weren’t any violins in the room.
The beautiful sound was coming from the ceiling of that 35 foot room. As I continued to sing and listen, I could tell that the volume of the sound increased as the volume of the voices increased in singing. It was perfectly harmonizing and yet blending with the voices, playing the same song that was being played in the room.
And then, after about 5 minutes, the sound began to diminish until I could no longer hear it just about the time the song in the room was finishing.
Next, for a period of time- I am not even sure how long it was- all the people in that room stood in absolute silence. There were none of the usual crowd noises that you usually hear- coughing, babies crying. Total silence that was like a blanket that rested over the people. We all stood in the Presence of the Lord, corporately awed to silence by the beauty of the One we were worshipping. And, that silence was more powerful than any sound I have ever heard.
As I have thought about that remarkable day, it reminds me of a song that I heard as a child
sung by the choir as a call to worship. “The Lord is in His holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before Him.”
It also reminds me that when we worship the One that is seated on the throne in heaven, sometimes heaven joins us. Or should I say, sometimes we join them.
