First Blog: Hello World!
Category : Glenda's Soap Box
Greetings, Salutations & a Big Ol’ Howdy-do!
This is my very first blog on my very first soapbox! It is my intention to add a diverse selection of entries into this blog. Being a lover of words, I have already compiled a LOT of written words, not the least of which is the book, A Table in the Frontier, just released in April of this year.
It was a labor of love and a quest to know more about a subject that has been of great interest to me for quite a few years- The Great Awakenings in America. These were- in my own words- times when Heaven touched Earth, and radically altered the culture where it visited. The Presence of God literally came to earth! People covenanted to pray and petition God for a spiritual awakening, and He came and changed everything!
The book began with a simple search to find out more about The Second Great Awakening, and in particular the events that took place in or around Goodlettsville the city where I live.
I discovered that there was indeed a location in Goodlettsville where some of these events took place- Walton’s Campground. I was convinced that with enough determination, and a myriad of visits to both the Tennessee State Library Archives and the Sumner County Archives, I would locate and document one such event.
Many months later, I discovered I had 100+ pages of information that would become a 200+ page book that contains first-hand accounts of The Second Great Awakening in Hendersonville and Gallatin, and also some cities in Kentucky, where it began. In essence, I have written the book that I wanted to read when I first began my search!
I was absolutely thrilled to read the personal accounts of the camp meetings, and also accounts of some of the leaders that God used in that historic move of God.
But, alas, no documentation of a first-hand account of a meeting held in Goodlettsville remains undiscovered. What was the driving force behind all of the research was never found, but what I learned during the course of my research has had a tremendous impact on my life. I found a hidden treasure that has made every hour in archives, libraries or books so totally worth the effort.
In the last chapter of the book, I share the details of my discovery, the magnitude of which surprised even me!
More later! Have a great day!
