Something in the Singing

In every revival and awakening, there has been a sound. And many times there has been a song that represented what the Lord was doing. But, even if not, there was always a sound associated with what God was doing.

1800 – Kentucky & Tennessee
“This is more unaccountable than anything else I ever saw. The subject in a very happy state of mind would sing most melodiously, not from the mouth or nose, but entirely in the breast, the sounds issuing from thence. Such music silenced everything, and attracted the attention of all. It was most heavenly; none could ever tire of hearing it.”

1904 – Wales
“The revival is born along by the billowing waves of sacred songs…It is the singing, not the preaching that is the instrument which is most efficacious in striking the hearts of men.”

A song that is said to be the sound of that revival, was the hymn, “Here is Love Vast as the Ocean”.

1906 – Azusa Street, CA
“When about 20 persons joined in singing the heavenly chorus, it was the most ravishing and unearthly music that ever fell on mortal ears.”

“Especially did the enchanting strains of the so-called “Heavenly Choir,” or hymns sung under the evident direction of the Holy Spirit both as to words and tune, thrill my whole being. It was not something that could be repeated at will, but supernaturally given for each special occasion and was one of the most indisputable evidences of the presence of the power of God. Perhaps nothing so greatly impressed people as this singing; at once inspiring a holy awe, or a feeling of indescribable wonder, especially if the hearers were in devout attitude.”

A song that is said to be the sound of that revival, was the hymn, “Under the Blood”.

1949 – Hebrides, Scotland
“For everyone who was in that revival, there was something [his voice broke as he was overcome with emotion remembering it] in the singing.  It was something as if it had just came down from heaven.  You couldn’t describe it.  There was something in it.  I could still tell the people who were in the revival.  See, when the singing, there was something in the singing that you cannot hear from an ordinary person.”

“The revival was all about the presence of God. Someone said that she felt the Spirit of the Lord was in the very air she was breathing. Whether they were in a meeting, walking along a road, in a boat, in a cinema, working in a field – the presence of God was everywhere!

Singing was another important aspect of the revival. As mentioned they sang the Word of God and the singing was full of Holy Spirit. One person remarked, ‘the singing was like fire going through my whole being.’ And ‘the singing was simply glorious, it was almost supernatural, full of joy and spiritual power.’”  (revival-library.org)
